Exploring Forest Health & Wildfire Mitigation on Public Lands

This tour will explore US Forest Service work on the West Crystal Fuel Break, highlighting how this work connects to wildfire mitigation and forest health projects on adjacent private lands.

The Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest is working with partners from the Northern Colorado Fireshed Collaborative to increase the fire resilience of our forests in northern Larimer County at the landscape scale through the Black Diamond Landscape Resiliency and Risk Reduction Project.

A sub-project within Black Diamond is the West Crystal Fuel Break. This project will increase Red Feather's community readiness to wildfire by reducing surface, ladder, and canopy fuels in areas adjacent or connected to high-risk resource values and improve firefighter response to wildfire events. This will be accomplished by reducing total surface fuel loading to limit surface fire intensity, removing ladder fuels to decrease surface to crown connectivity, and maintaining or increasing discontinuity among tree crowns along strategic features (e.g., roads and ridgelines) adjacent to the community.
